The Book of Kells is perhaps the most famous medieval manuscript in the world. It attracts over half a million visitors each year to Trinity College, Dublin, where it is kept, although it can also be viewed in its entirety online.
Created by Irish monks around 800 CE, its intricate designs, ornaments, and illustrations continue to amaze, and its distinctive script is a beautiful example of the hand known variously as Irish half uncial, insular majuscule, and other names.
In this illustrated talk, Meredith will speak about the fascinating history surrounding the Book of Kells and other insular manuscripts, and she will highlight the interesting design conventions, devices and motifs used by the scribes and artists who wrote and illustrated the manuscript, the materials and tools they used, and the lively letterforms they developed.
